Description
This seminar focuses on the materials, construction details, and maintenance practices
that help extend the service of life of asphalt pavements. Slides will be shown that
demonstrate proper and improper maintenance techniques. Ample time will be allowed to
address questions on specific maintenance issues. The seminar will include discussions on:
- Pavement evaluation to determine the types and causes of pavement distress.
- Techniques, equipment, and materials for effective crack sealing.
- Procedures, equipment, and materials for effective asphalt patching and utility repair.
- Design, specification, and construction quality control of asphalt overlays.

Gravel Road Maintenance
Workshop Description
This workshop is designed to help road and highway supervisors and crews become familiar
with the materials, techniques, and equipment required to maintain gravel roads. Among the
topics discussed is geotextile fabric, including the difference between woven and
non-woven fabric.
Who Should Attend
Local road and highway supervisors and field crews responsible for gravel road
construction and maintenance.

Pennsylvania.
Hot-Mix Asphalt Construction
Workshop Description
This course is designed to help participants understand the effect of construction actions
on the final product. This program reviews the entire HMA Construction process begining
with the delivery of the HMA to the job site, through lay down and compaction, and
concluding with quality assurance of the completed pavement. It combines lectures and
problem solving workshop sessions to provide participants with a working knowledge of the
HMA constrcution process and equipment.
Who Should Attend
This course is designed for an audience that contains contractor supervisory personnel,
and Federal, State, and Local Highway agency construction engineers and field inspectors
involved in the planning, construction, and review of HMA placement projects.
- Participants are required to bring a hand-held calculator.

Roadway Drainage
Workshop Description
This workshop reviews the importance of good drainage and includes discussions of water
and its effect on roads, problems caused by improper drainage and some of the ways to
solve these problems. Also, the workshop presents types of drainage structures and their
uses, materials, installation, maintenance considerations, and pipe sizing.
Who Should Attend
City and county roadway engineers and maintenance personnel, and anyone else responsible
for roadway design, contruction, or maintenance.

Construction Inspection for Local Agency Employees
Workshop Description
This one day session will cover some of major duties and responsibilities of an individual
responsible for the quality of a project. It will address the importance of understanding
the plans, the contract, the order of operations, the materials to be used and the various
quality control tests used in project inspection. This course is presented in a straight
forward manner and deals with the reality of everyday factors involving contractors and
agencies.
Who Should Attend
All local agency employees that will be involved in any inspection or oversight of agency
projects.

Who Should Attend
This workshop is intended for employees who do the welding in their municipalities or
highway garages. It is also designed to update supervisors and superintendents. This is a
"hands on" program and will cover basic practical welding techniques that will
improve job safety, efficiency and productivity. Any skill level weldor will find
something of interest and improve their profeciency. The basic program will familiarize
any attendee with the safe and correct methods of both oxy and arc welding.

fabrication shop in the Finger Lakes farm area of New York State.
Snow and Ice Control
Workshop Description
This workshop examines snow and ice control procedures on roads and highways. You learn
about the properties of snow and ice and appropriate treatments such as common deicing
chemicals as well as alternative materials. There is discussion of winter storm
preparation and snow removal equipment and operations.
Who Should Attend
Road and Highway maintenance supervisors, foremen and others with direct responsibility
for winter road maintenance. The presentation also is useful for elected officials and law
enforcement personnel
